In the — years preceding European contact, the Mississippian culture built large, complex cities and maintained far-flung regional trading networks. Historically documented tribes in the North Carolina region included the Carolina Algonquian -speaking tribes of the coastal areas, such as the Chowanoke , Roanoke , Pamlico , Machapunga , Core, Cape Fear Indians , and others, who were the first encountered by the English; Iroquoian -speaking Meherrin , Cherokee and Tuscarora of the interior; and Southeastern Siouan tribes, such as the Cheraw , Waxhaw , Saponi , Waccamaw , and Catawba.
Spanish attempts to settle the interior, with several forts built by the Jose Pardo expedition in the s, ended when the Indians destroyed the forts and killed most of the garrisons. Nearly two decades later, English colonists began to settle the coastal areas, starting with a charter in Sir Walter Raleigh namesake of the city of Raleigh began two small settlements in the late s, but they failed.

Dickason Olive Patricia. The Brazilian connection. A look at the origin of French techniques for trading with Amerindians. It is widely believed that it was in the North American fur trade that the French learned their techniques for dealing with Amerindians, a type of diplomacy in which they excelled. This Franco-Brazilian trade lasted throughout the sixteenth century, beginning much earlier and peaking sooner than the northern fur trade. While it lasted, it was France’s major commercial enterprise in the New World, as long as brazilwood was a major source for the red dye in high demand for the burgeoning textile trade.

Expanding Horizons European exploration in the 15th and 16th centuries drew on many sources. A growing desire for expansion and trade, along with advances in shipbuilding and commercial technique, fostered the search for new markets and for the legendary sources of precious metals and other commodities. Portuguese exploration and trade along the West African coast and to Atlantic islands, encouraged and directed by Prince Henry de Avis, the Navigator , continued throughout the 15th century.
He assembled an international team of experts which made revolutionary advances in geography, navigation, and cartography. Handbooks, guides, and charts, along with the invention of more sophisticated and practical nautical instruments, professional-ized what had been largely an intuitive craft. Crucial to these innovations were Muslim and Jewish contributions in mapmaking and navigational instruments. Christopher Columbus went to sea on the crest of these maritime advances.
European world view in the late 15th century wavered between bizarre imaginings about the unknown and scientific observations of the known.

Smithsonian Institution, Bureau of American Ethnology. Bulletin Washington, America in Maps, Dating from to London: Holmes & Meier.
THIS is the first major historical atlas of the United States and probably the most comprehensive work of its kind that has yet been published for any country. Its aim is to illustrate cartographically, in manageable compass, and yet with considerable detail, essential facts of geography and of history that condition and explain the development of the United States. There are, of course, no absolute criteria by which we may measure the relative importance of historical events.
Historical judgment, however, must rest on the recognition of fundamental relationships in space as well as in time, and these are often made intelligible through the medium of maps. In many respects the history of the United States reflects our European origins. In other respects our national development has been distinctive and exceptional if not unique. These two sides of American history are well represented in the Atlas.
While the maps show how world-wide forces have operated on American soil, they also lay emphasis upon what is characteristic of the United States. In Europe the foundations of national life were laid far back in the Middle Ages or earlier. America is nearer its beginnings. The chronicle of material expansion is a large part of its record. The sections of the Atlas dealing with the Natural Environment, Cartography , Explorers’ Routes, Indians, Settlement and Population, Lands, and Boundary Disputes illustrate these topics and fill more than half of the plates.
